Dr. Xu is co-founder of Baidu, the world’s largest Chinese search engine. From 1999 to 2004, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of Baidu. Baidu successfully went IPO on NASDAQ (Symbol: BIDU) in 2005. Baidu is the first Chinese Internet company to be listed on the NASDAQ 100 Index.
Before co-founding Baidu, Dr. Xu worked at two biotechnology start-up companies, QIAGEN INC and STRATAGENE INC, in technical support and marketing in the US. From 1998 to 1999, Dr. Xu engaged himself as co-producer in a large TV documentary entitled “A Journey to Silicon Valley” which thoroughly revealed Silicon Valley’s secrets of entrepreneurial successes.
Dr. Xu earned his bachelor and master’s degrees in biology from the Biology Department of Peking University from 1982 to 1989. In 1993, he obtained a Ph.D. in Biology from Texas A&M University. He did post-doctorate research at the University of California, Berkeley from 1994-1996.
